@MFTWrecks Probably because of licensing, namely most emulators are open source and under license so using one of those requires giving it away as per the terms, i.e for free.
As for hiring the guys, maybe that's an option, but that's a lot of work to do with a disjointed GitHub based team.
There is also the risk of precedent. As with everything in the legally grey-ish area that hasn't been updated since technology was invented, there's a good chance that one person could go "see, they endorsed it by hiring these guys on" and then boom, you're in a place these companies don't want to be.
Regardless of your opinion on that, the businesses don't want that. It's the same with fan games. You could hire em, but you can also lessen your hold on your IP by showing that hey that's okay do what you want with it.
I imagine someone could reasonably challenge SEGA for being so lax with fan games after all.
@Jayslow It was a fantastic achievement for Vicarious Visions. Hope they're thrilled with what they accomplished and are happy making....oh they're part of Blizzard now.
It was the first one I've tuned into in a good while, and it was quite a lot of brown Asia settings with samurai action, Silent Hill 2 looking rough, two framey as hell VR games, Overwatch, Marvel's Overwatch, and Astro.
And holy hell, after that middle section of Asia aesthetic samurai games just....blending together in a weird soup (I couldn't tell you what was what in there) Astro stood out like a neon city in the void of space.
That kind of just....whimsy and fun, that filled the PS1 and 2 and most of the PS3 that made me personally a PS fan (I started with the PS1 long before I got another brand in my life outside of the Mega Drive) has just evaporated from a whole load of ....single player narrative experiences.
And that's cool, that's what ya wanna focus on, but variety breeds a strong platform.
Somehow, and call it a hunch here, the woman behind early Assassins Creed, the first Watch Dogs disaster, Assassins Creed Unity Bugfest and even Star Wars Battlefront 2, who hasnt successfully released a game for the past 7 years and counting, might not deliver on this.
@Rob3008 I know Switch is the biggest platform Japan has ever had, that's what I meant by "Of course it should release of the biggest platform Japan has ever had."
But youd also think theyd release it on the 11 year old more capable system thats still widely used the world over too, for extra money.
@LikelySatan To be fair, from the publishers view, its a remake of Dragon Quest 3, of course it should release on the biggest platform Japan has ever had. That'd just be leaving money on the table.
But to not also put it on a still massively used, more capable but older machine that is used widely worldwide? Odd.
It says something that the main one of the three, Middle Earth and Friends (lmao what) is the one that seemingly struggles to release anything. The other two manage just fine to pump out releases even if they aren't incredible.
To give context for how long this game has been MIA: It was first billed as Switch exclusive. Then it got Game Pass at launch attached to it, so the initial deal obviously ran out.
Now it's going to everything Day One.
When you're exclusivity deals are expiring before your game comes out, it needs to be a damn good game.
"The news comes directly from publisher Atlus, via the game's new accolades trailer (which just so happens to include your favourite PlayStation website)."
@Shepherd_Tallon Turns out this guy did it with Nintendo too and they ended up making a specific investor relations Twitter account as what he reported was so far from the truth and would have caused actual series damage with shareholders.
Remember, Nintendo platforms are for Nintendo's own games (until they jump to PC too which they will one day) and the third party games they either fund themselves (which may move later like Wonderful 101), or bought timed exclusivity for.
And then there's the games that are elsewhere but Nintendo ends up publishing on their platform just to have it.
@B0udoir I'm afraid when you play Sonic Frontiers on any platform those 2D assets are still popping in mere metres away from you. It's hilarious running at max settings at 4K on PC and the universe still teleports in and out 🤣
Miyanoto said in an interview that BOTW needed to sell 2m units to start being profitable after 6 years of development. That puts it around $120m.
Plus also consider, Mario Kart 8 has sold 60m units. Plus DLC. All that money isn't being funneled exclusively into the next one. It's being spread around for smaller titles, more niche games, library fillers. That's how they work the business.
Big hits fund smaller titles for variety and bulk out the library.
Sony's problem, and the industry at large, is the budgets are so damn high they only have the option of profits going exclusively into the next game because they can't sell enough to have enough funds to spread around.
Well when you have a contract with the government of Singapore to have a subsidised game studio in the country and therefore whatever that game is has to come out.....after so many years of development hell I'd be gassing it up to to try and recoup ANYTHING at all.
The industry makes more money than Hollywood yet he insists on bringing out Hollywood people to pull views to get that ad revenue and more eyes on trailers, yet only gives some, not all, award winners 30 seconds to speak.
But if we had more time to the people behind the games and not the content creators, eSports players and the voice actors, and more time to the award winners in a similar timeslot that he keeps giving Kojima, then the people behind the games could become as big as the Hollywood names and it'll all work out.
And sure, it'd drag on, but its already 4 damn hours of ads for crying out loud. It drags on as it is.
For a show that wants to award the best games and the best the industry has, we sure dont see them.
The same way other devs like the team behind Warframe found an optimisation by porting to Switch, plus stuff like the Ori team developing new optimising techniques because of it.
Sometimes having a ceiling breeds innovation that benefits everyone.
@get2sammyb Agreed that the money COULD fund loads of other single player games.
But, doing 12 at once? That's a lot of development cost, and we already know Deviation Games had theirs canned, so thats already sunk costs to be recovered by whichever of the twelve is successful.
But then, saying you're going to realise 12 and hope one sticks....that's not inspiring confidence. That's saying quite plainly, throw it at the wall and see if it sticks, and with that knowledge that they most probably intend to can the 11 unsuccessful ones, why would you even bother getting invested in any of the games at all?
If it was three or four, sure. But 12? That's insane, and should the first 6 not land, then is there going to be any faith in the latter 6? Especially when the two we DO know of actually releasing anytime soon are Jade "Hasn't released a game in a decade" Raymond's "Transforming multiplayer" game that's just Payday, and whatever the hell Concorde is.
After the whole mess with losing the games in the first place, I think that remaking the whole lot is probably in their plans. Gives em games to remaster later on rather than trying to decompile retail copies of the originals again.
How the hell does that work? The thing just clips in and connects to the PS5. Does the drive contain a chip that tells it it's paired? Does the drive itself connect to the internet?
@Deoxyr1bose It's hard to say if it'll change in the interim. Obviously what's already in the pipeline will still come, and with an interim leader being the CFO, the guy counting the money Jim made them by doing his controversial moves....don't get hopes up too high.
It's amazing to me how Spyro started off as equal to Crash in status, right through the PS2 generation and even into their reboots where they both faded from obscurity (Crash went first there somehow with only 2 games to Spyro's three).
And then the remakes started with Crash, the safer bet, then Spyro, both back on equal treatment as it used to be and then....Spyro became a Crash Bandicoot character.
And here we are. He's gonna be added to Crash Team Rumble at some point, because of course he is, and that'll be about it.
@Luigia Bluetooth on the Switch was used for controllers first and foremost, with it opening to audio later.
This device has no need of Bluetooth, even though I wouldn't be stunned to see a Bluetooth chip in there anyway given factory level teardowns have revealed it's basically an Android tablet.
@get2sammyb I think buying up every developer, IP and publisher within arms reach and having over 400 games in active development with thousands of staff was already.....very weird, especially when we see just how few of those games actually come out over the past few years, and how.....eh.....they all are.
The money had to keep flowing, which meant constant investment into Embracer, and evidently, cold feet happened and it became unsustainable.
@KaijuKaiser You also get the vouchers to be fair, which, for a new game at launch over on my side of the pond, is a pair of vouchers for £84 (Not including gold points for a discount).
If I was to go buy Smash and Tears of the Kingdom with those two vouchers, that's £120 worth of games for £84. I'd say that's a pretty good discount on any Nintendo published digital title.
But, that's not the point. And I do believe @Smiffy01 also missed the point at large, for 8 people to get the highest tier of NSO...is the same price as the base tier of PS+ for one person. Think about that. 8 people get online access for the same price as one on another system. Sure there are other perks around it, but when you really break down what this is, a fee to play online, that's not a good look.
