Re: Dominant Balatro Dev Pokes Fun at Absurd PEGI Ratings Debacle

To be fair, EA and 2K get a lot more flack for their casino elements than the anime gacha games. It’s all a bit shady but I like football and Ultimate Team is practically the only mode in FIFA/EAFC that hasn’t been completely gutted. Never spent a penny more than what I paid for the game (too much, it’s pretty dire this year). Anyway play Balatro it’s amazing.

Ok there’s a huge difference between product placement in movies and games. In movies, there’s products in scenes because those are filmed in the real world, which involves real objects. In this scenario, somebody’s job was to create 3D models of these products for the sole reason of advertising. If Porsche had created the prop for a movie, you can understand why it would have a Porsche logo, but this is a render created by an art team that isn’t Porsche and therefore the spaceship itself isn’t a Porsche. It’s infinitely more pathetic to actually create adverts out of thin air than it is to have already-existing products in a movie. Game looks decent outside of that.

@NxtDoc What have you seen Tom Holland in that wasn’t a blockbuster? He’s an actual actor, brilliant in Wolf Hall despite his age and he was a superb Billy Elliott on stage. It’s a big claim to say that he’s a poor actor compared to other Spider-Man actors, you have to actually watch the good movies the three of them have made and not the rubbish.

@Balaam_ I would rather play a million glitch-filled games with heart like Morrowind than go anywhere near a polished but boring game. Refusing to go near glitchy games essentially rules out the entirety of the late 90s to 2000s on PC, when some of the best games ever made came out. There’s a limit but if the core game’s good then it’s worth it. And getting this annoyed by Todd Howard is like losing a game of chess to a dog.

@J2theEzzo Readability is essentially how easy it is to parse exactly what’s going on from a visual standpoint. Overwatch is the main one I played for years and that game worked hard to improve it over several updates, outlines, colour schemes for enemy teams and the like. The third person camera makes it difficult to spot certain smaller heroes anyway, Jeff is a bloody nightmare to spot especially when diving. They just need to tone down certain particle effects and add heavier outlines around the enemy teams I’d say.

@BushSwan The Overton Window sort of renders that entire philosophy moot. You can only lean centre in reference to what’s currently being offered in terms of ‘left’ and ‘right’.

(On topic, this game looks great and there only seem to be a couple outliers that aren’t as big on it, means consensus is generally positive)

Re: Ubisoft FPS XDefiant Shutting Down, Not Accepting New Players

@HonestHick At its core, that’s anti-art. Games that are designed to make money (slop) are one thing but plenty games are developed out of passion and either make a ton of money or make no money at all. You’re commodifying games as content when they’re a form of art, they aren’t inherently only designed to generate cash. It’s reductive to only judge games based on their sales performance considering how many great games there are that didn’t sell too many copies.
