Re: Exclusivity Is the Achilles' Heel of Huge Blockbusters, Says Former PlayStation Exec

carlos82

There are plenty who are opposed to the end of exclusivity but the reality is with these ever expanding budgets and development times, it is something that simply is unsustainable.

People keep saying these games wouldn't be made without exclusivity but if for example Sony thinks they can sell an extra 10 to 15 million copies of Spider-Man 3 if it launched elsewhere as well as PS5, then of course they'll make the game.

Of course there is a balance but it's painfully obvious that the margins on the current business model are shrinking

Re: Japan Sales Charts: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Tops, But Doesn't Even Come Close to Remake

carlos82

@ShogunRok I wonder if it's the reported length of the game or many like myself who enjoyed Remake but weren't blown away by it as it kind of dragged on and may be put off. Or perhaps the lacklustre visuals in the demo, or even an indication of many have nostalgia for Midgar as the opening part of the original game but many may not have actually finished it.

For me its just there are too many games at the moment and coming off the back of Like A Dragon I don't want to commit to another big game yet and then there's Dragons Dogma soon

Re: Sony Secures Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy as PlayStation Console Exclusives

carlos82

At this point I never expected it to be on Xbox anyway, Remake is already a few years old and on PC, so of it was going to Xbox it would have already happened.

Playstation originally built its brand upon 3rd party exclusives and given how long development times have increased, it makes sense to try again, whether that's good for gamers or the games themselves is up for debate.

It's funny to think that I started with PS1 playing Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII and Tekken and now these are still the games I've been playing most on PS5 over the last 12 months with their latest entries

Re: Reaction: The Problem with PlayStation Right Now

carlos82

Sony don't help themselves by closing their smaller studios who could be making lower budget games and they seem to be putting all their eggs in one basket with the huge budget AAA games. I watched a video yesterday which shows the difference in the number of games published by Sony across their generations and the number on PS5 is tiny compared to what it used to be. Sure many of those were 3rd party developed but it was surprising how few there are today.

In general the industry and gamers need to start normalising smaller games with simpler graphics. Astro Bot is a great example, a free game included with the PS5 and is absolutely amazing but where is a sequel? Last year Robocop and the short Like A Dragon Gaiden were amongst my favourite games and I'd love more games like this

Re: Tekken 8's Tekken Shop Will Include Both Paid and Free Content on PS5

carlos82

@get2sammyb this is from Harada himself and whatever anyone thinks of microtransactions, the fact is they are necessary now for a game to be supported going forward. I don't mind as long they're reasonably priced and I'll be playing this game for a long time

"Development costs are now 10 times more expensive than in the 90's and more than double or nearly triple the cost of Tekken 7. Even the Fight Lounge servers are costly to maintain. In the past there weren't so many specs and there wasn't online. Plus they didn't have such high resolution and high definition. Now, So many people want the game to run and be supported for a long time. It costs money to continually update the game for that reason. However, he probably only keeps good memories of the old games he experienced as a boy and does not pay attention to these changing times and increasing costs. The economic situation and everything else is changing. If we simply do nothing as he suggests, the game will simply stop running in a few months. I think that is what he wants. So there is no point in talking to him about these realities. He wants us to stop economic activity and stop updating and supporting the game."

Re: 900 PlayStation Employees Laid Off, London Studio Closed

carlos82

Obviously this is affecting many industries and not just gaming but gaming is going to have to change and very quickly and is with Xbox putting their games on Playstation and Sony onto PC.

That said they and gamers need to start normalising smaller budget games with less graphical fidelity. It's exciting when games look really nice but they aren't any more enjoyable to play

Re: Sony Testing PSVR2 Compatibility on PC, Aiming for This Year

carlos82

@Jaz007 standalone VR does have its advantages though, many of the games I played on PSVR/2 aren't visually demanding such as Beat Saber, and the freedom of standalone means I don't have to take over my living room to play it, plus some of the mixed reality games do look great fun.

There's certainly pros and cons either way but for my use case the Quest is the better option

Re: Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (PS5) - Strong Sequel Seeks a New Direction

carlos82

@ShogunRok great review. Personally I felt Remake was a bit bloated already and I had to leave it for a bit to get the motivation to finish it. This sounds very much like I'd feel the same way.

Ironically though, it's mainly Like a Dragon that's going to make me skip this at launch as I'm having way too much fun with it and it's battle system is what I would have loved from a modern Final Fantasy game. I'll pick this up at some point when I've got more time to play it

Re: Skull and Bones (PS5) - Solid Sea-RPG Ships First-Rate Naval Gameplay

carlos82

The grinding is what immediately turns me off this game, it doesn't sound fun grinding one thing just to grind another. From this and what I've seen elsewhere it's largely what I expected, a potentially fun pirate game largely spoiled by Ubisofts awful RPG mechanics.

I may pick it up in a big sale down the line but for now I'll stick to Sea of Thieves

Re: Upgraded PS5 Pro Planning to Be the Best Place to Play GTA 6

carlos82

"a launch that will be a shot in the arm for the entire gaming industry" I'm not sure how the masses just fawning over and playing one game benefits the rest of the industry but whatever

At this point I'll probably buy a PS5 Pro if it's a noticeable jump, not for GTAVI but the PS5 is already showing it's age with many 60fps modes looking low res and even playing Like A dragon on PS5 it's unstable in quite a few areas. I've since started playing that on my PC and in those same areas I'm over 100fps at a higher resolution too. I'm not expecting it to match my PC but locked 60fps and a sharper image would be nice

Re: Helldivers 2 Hype Continues, More Concurrents Than Every PlayStation PC Port Combined

carlos82

@CielloArc For the time being I'd expect that to be the case but just a few years ago it was unthinkable that a PlayStation game would launch on PC but today, Returnal, Spider-Man, The Last of Us, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, Days Gone, Sackboy, Horizon and Uncharted are all on PC and the upcoming remake of Until Dawn looks to be launching at the same time on PC.

Don't get me wrong, I don't expect their bigger games to launch day one on PC but that gap will shrink

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 516

carlos82

Some more Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, which is just brilliant fun and a very well made JRPG which highlights what we've lost with modern Final Fantasy games.

I'm also playing Tomb Raider Remastered and these games are like a breath of fresh air compared to modern games. No map markers, no hand holding, no messy hud, no talking to yourself or an annoying sidekick, just well designed levels that leave you alone with the tools at your disposal to explore them. Oh and the tank controls still work great

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Skull and Bones?

carlos82

@Kidfunkadelic83 well Sea of Thieves is a good game and Skull and Bones is erm......

In all seriousness, in Skull and Bones you just drive a ship like in Black Flag. In Sea of Thieves you control a pirate and have to manually sail the ship at the wheel, control the sails, load and fire the canons manually, I find it way more engaging

Re: Sony Predicts Slide in PS5 Sales with No Major Existing IPs Planned Before March 2025

carlos82

@get2sammyb even outside of Nintendo, Capcom have manager to release multiple Resident Evil games in a relatively short time frame and they all look excellent, or RGG with multiple Yakuza games and these have basically carried this generation for me.

We must surely be getting to a point where these long development cycles for AAA games are simple unsustainable

There's sadly a lot of focus on graphics these days which seems to drastically increase development times for many

Re: PS5 Sales Touch 55 Million As Sony Breaks Revenue Records

carlos82

Isn't a very high proportion of that revenue just simply microtransactions which flow through the PS store and straight to EA, Activision and Epic?

Whilst I do like the PS5, this is easily the most disappointing generation and so far it just feels like a high powered PS4. You could have ignored PS5 for it's first 3 years and missed virtually nothing game wise.

It does increasingly look like that long term survival will be putting more of their games elsewhere

Re: Tomb Raider 1-3 Remastered Starring Lara Croft (PS5) - The New Standard for PS1 Re-Releases

carlos82

"these games very much subscribe to a classic design philosophy thatโ€™s largely outdated by 2024โ€™s standards"

"you really need to think about how youโ€™re going to get to where you need to be"

My two favourite sentences from this review, I've not played these for a long time outside a brief go of an RT mod. Thats said I have also long since grown tired of many modern AAA games with their largely automatic and frankly boring traversal, it's also one of the reasons I enjoyed Death Stranding so much as it made it a challenge again.

Personally the lack of rewind isn't a negative for me as I'd much rather not have such a crutch available, the only choice is now whether to play on PS4 or PS5, I don't suppose save files transfer between them?

Re: Poll: What Do You Think of the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Demo?

carlos82

Demo was decent, don't think it was great visually and certainly didn't look any better than the previous game but the updated combat is fun. I've long since had the Deluxe version preordered and am looking forward to it.

Though I'm unlikely to be playing it at launch as Like A Dragon is too much fun and I doubt I'll have finished it by then
