Re: Japan Sales Charts: Astro Bot Barely Registers at Retail, PS5 Numbers Plummet After Price Hike

gollumb82

Reminds me of Valkyria Chronicles on PS3. Fantastic game, great reviews, fans practically begging others to buy it… It still flopped and led to a long hiatus in the series, till it was released on PC and VC4 restored some faith in people’s tastes. I’m starting to think the PS3/4 era was when Playstation peaked for fantastic single player story-driven games. All we’ll get now (especially if Astro Bot turns out to be a bust) is bound to be more live service nonsense. Guess I’m happy I can go back to PS2/3 classics on my ROG Ally. Fingers crossed it’s just Japan being Japan.

Re: Poll: Are You Sold on PS5 Pro?

gollumb82

I’ll stick with my PS5 and ROG Ally combo. The price is high, but I see no point in the console. It’s not a PC where all games have scalable graphics and all games benefit from a hardware upgrade. Here, you can only get extra bells and whistles if a dev decides to make a Pro patch. No thanks, PS4 Pro taught me that it’s not worth the money.

@palmab
I don’t have a problem with adjusting settings. In fact, I use the ROG Ally as my main gaming platform and installed Steam OS on it (and a whole bunch of emulators) so I know a thing or two about PCs. It’s just a matter of how expensive it is if you want an experience that beats current gen consoles in terms of both performance (fairly easy after 4 years from launch) and user experience (ease of use, performance under load, slick OS etc). That’s why I switched to the Ally- it’s a PC, but is fairly affordable, customisable, can be used docked or handheld and with Steam OS on it, it’s basically a console).

@NEStalgia
Yeah, well, Cyberpunk 2077 with RTX on ultra can’t be called subtle 😜 Still, it was worth it. In the long term, though, I couldn’t imagine using that setup as it was just too loud, too RGB and too noisy. When I checked how much I would have to spend on a punchy PC with proper cooling etc I realised I was looking at spending about $1800. In Poland, at least, where we pay luxury tax on anything gaming-related 🙁

Re: Failing Manufacturers Are Pushing the Narrative That Consoles Are Dying, Says Ex-Xbox Exec

@SlipperyFish
This!! I couldn’t agree more. That’s exactly what I got. A good cpu, a decent gpu but at the cost of everything else cheap and crappy. I still paid $1300 because electronics equipment is ridiculously expensive in Poland sadly. I’m not making that mistake again. Even with my Ally being a handheld PC I slapped Steam OS on it just to make it more like a console lol. Windows sucks.

Re: Failing Manufacturers Are Pushing the Narrative That Consoles Are Dying, Says Ex-Xbox Exec

gollumb82

I game on my Ally mostly but I got a PS5 just to be able to play really demanding games that my Ally won’t be able to handle. No way am I paying $1300+ on a piece of hardware that plays games ever again. Had a gaming PC (Ryzen 7, RTX3070) a year ago and got rid of it- it was noisier than PS4 PRO (if you can believe it) and could heat the flat in winter all by itself lol. Never again.

Re: Rumour: Sony Paying Close Attention to Handheld Market After PS Portal's Shock Success

gollumb82

Nah, I already have a collection of PS2/3 and Vita games on my Ally. Ditto for all the Sony games available on Steam. As for the ROG Ally you can get one used for about $350 which is rather affordable. Sure, the battery life holds it back but the new Ally X does not have that flaw. Sony would have a bit of trouble selling a handheld with limiting software (unlike Linux and Windows) in the market where Steam Deck, ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go already rule. The Portal is nothing like those anyway as a streaming only device.

Re: Stellar Blade Dev Expects to Sell More Copies on PC Than PS5

gollumb82

I’m with @NEStalgia on this one. Same story with the platforms and since I got into handheld PCs a year ago I’ve all but abandoned consoles. I have a PS5 but barely use it. When I do, I stream it to my ROG Ally. I’m almost certain my next purchase will be ROG Ally 2 and my PS5 my last console purchase.

Re: Baldur's Gate 3 Still Winning, Adds Coveted Hugo Award to List

gollumb82

Let’s just say I’m not a huge fan of fantasy (prefer sci-fi, cyberpunk) but I’m doing everything I can in act 3 of Baldur’s Gate 3 to actually not finish the game because I don’t know what I will play afterwards. It’s one of those games, like Witcher 3, RDR2, Mass Effect trilogy etc that leave a gaping hope in your mind and heart after you’ve finished them. Larian deserve all those accolades.

Re: PS5's Lack of Tentpole Exclusives Isn't Hurting Engagement, Says Sony

gollumb82

@NEStalgia
At the risk of sounding like an old fart I will just say that as someone whose first games were Donkey Kong and Cadillacs and Dinosaurs, which I played at arcades in the early 90s, I grew up watching my beloved pasttime evolve from niche stuff made by nerds and for nerds to an entertainment for the masses (which in and of itself is great) that is made with primarily revenue, advertising, monetising, engagement and shareholders in mind. It’s depressing, really. How is it possible that this gen is slowly starting to decline and we are yet to get a new Naughty Dog game? Ridiculous. That’s why I find myself enjoying older titles of late, while catching up on modern stuff a few years after launch when they are dirt cheap and fully patched. At least we have indies that provide that spark of creativity still.

On ROG Ally: Baldur’s Gate 3. Finally clicked for me and I’ve put in 25 hours into the game and loving it!
On PS5 (streamed to my Ally mostly- daughter keeps occupying the tv with the Switch lol) a bit of Spider-man Remastered. Halfway through (my second playthrough) and still having a lot of fun.

@Northern_munkey
I love WRC Generations but I’m not a fan of WRC23. Somehow the game looks worse than Dirt Rally 2.0. At least to me. Also, the tracks and colour palette of Generations blows WRC 23 out of the water. I hope WRC 24 or 25 uses Unreal Engine 5. That would be a huge jump in visual fidelty. I kinda feel bad for Kylotonn. Ever since WRC 8 their games have really been great and there was some competition in the rally games department. Not the case anymore. Anyway, enjoy your racing setup!

Re: PlayStation Fans Are Losing Their Heads Over an Iffy Portable PS4 Rumour

gollumb82

@Porco
You have a point there. I have quite a few games in my PS library that I had to double dip in to be able to play them on the Ally, but if you have a PS4/5 you can stream those games directly into the Ally. I hear it works better than on PS Portal. I’ve been playing Gran Turismo 5 lately and it works really well on the Ally. There’s little hope you will ever be able to play such games on a Sony handheld I think. I had a PS Vita a while back and I really liked it for what it was. Maybe the growing popularity of handhelds will convince Sony to give it another shot.

Re: Poll: Are You Hyped for Summer Game Fest 2024?

gollumb82

I’m more hyped for the Xbox showcase. I think it will actually deliver something substantial to look forward to (there’s rumours of the first glimpse of the Xbox handheld and a major game shadow drop). Last year’s show was great so I hope to be entertained at least.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 531

gollumb82

It’s almost summer time so I’m doing my annual Uncharted 1-4 playthrough. Already done with 1-3, midway through 4. It’s my 5th or 6th playthrough and I’m still having a blast. Some Gran Turismo 5 on the side as well. Also, watching the Astro Bot trailer on repeat. Loved Astro’s Playroom so counting down the days till the sequel launches.

Re: EA Exploring 'Thoughtful Implementations' of In-Game Advertising

gollumb82

@MikeOrator
I hear you. Don’t get me wrong, I will never say that gaming was better 20 years ago. It’s much better today with all the hardware and software options we have. It’s a matter of mentality and you said it yourself- ever since corps took over it’s been mostly about generating profit, zero creative risks and milking the fanbase till they drop.

Re: EA Exploring 'Thoughtful Implementations' of In-Game Advertising

gollumb82

@MikeOrator @NEStalgia
Well said. Both of you. I agree about Steam being the shining beacon these days, but when Gabe is gone who knows what happens. I mostly game on PC these days (well, ROG Ally to be exact) but I keep my fingers crossed for Sony and Nintendo because gaming is still my favourite leisure activity. I hate to see it go the way of Hollywood.
