Re: Poll: Can a Game's Brutal Difficulty Put You Off Playing It?

LikelySatan

Maybe not the difficulty, necessarily, but I definitely will put a game down if it's too "sweaty" when I just want to relax. Doom Eternal is amazing, but it needed more quiet moments. They put stage hazards and platforming in to keep the time between battles interesting, but I missed just low stakes exploration.

@get2sammyb i love their games, but they could really improve combat, hit boxes, and ai. You should be able to beat any boss, first encounter, just through reflexes and reading tells. Instead, you are supposed to memorize. That's bad design. Like R-type, where you can just slam into a dead end because you chose the wrong path. From aren't the scrappy underdogs anymore. An enemy shouldn't be able to change directions mid-air and slam into me after a dodgeroll.
Anyway! Sorry I ended up venting. It's just cause I love their games, and so many of them are juuuuuuust shy of perfection.

"The most delicious irony is that gaming journalists, famously worse at games than their readers, inexplicably cleared the content and wrote guides for others to follow"
This made me so happy. It's always hilarious to me that so many people who love games will be in a comments section slamming games media. It's so transparent that they just wish they had the job. It's also great when that comments section is under a YouTuber who is bought and sold with trips and free games, probably a video that is just said YouTuber reading a Polygon article. Lol.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree?

LikelySatan

I'm not quite ready for a big complicated game right now. I'm starting Rise of the Ronin and continuing with various Switch games. Work has been difficult, so I'm just trying to escape reality with something I can pop in and out of without feeling like I need to start a new save if you catch my drift.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Looks Legit on PS5, PS4

LikelySatan

@Shad361 Because he sounds idiotic. His friends more so. Freedom Planet has some embarrassing VO as well, so Sonic is even inspiring them there.
The problem with saying I'm stuck on the old design is that I love a whole lot of 3D platformers. Plenty of the old guard 2D games found a way to break into 3D without resorting to lock on/QTE slop that plays itself. Not my job to tell them how to figure that out.
Anyway I'll stop. I'm frustrated with the series, but it's not like I'm missing out anyway. There's plenty to play elsewhere.

Re: Talking Point: What PS5 Game Had the Best Showing Across All the Summer Gaming Events?

LikelySatan

I think AC showed way better than I thought it would. It's unfortunate that the messaging from Ubisoft has been so mixed. It's disposable because of the online install requirements but it's also incredibly expensive to get the full game. Shrug. Guess I'll be getting it used. Anyway, Doom and Astro are my choices. It was a pretty lackluster showing from Sony imo. I'd say XBOX blew them out of the water, but almost everything XBOX showed was 2025 anyway.

Re: Sonic X Shadow Generations Looks Legit on PS5, PS4

@Maubari Yeah that is definitely fortunate for you, haha. I'd like to still enjoy Sonic, but so much of it is embarrassing or just feels like trash to play. I wish his friends would just stop talking or go away, and that they'd go back to music that doesn't make me want to stab my ear drums in protest (the Genesis OSTs are legendary, Crush 40 etc is not for me)...those kinds of things.
I was a Genesis kid. I always say the NES was what made me love games but the Genesis made me obsess over them. My point is that I've been playing Sonic games, as they release, from the beginning, and I used to be a fan. Sonic changed and I did.
That said, are we going to start doing the revisionist thing with Sonic 06 now? Is that what the world needs, lol? It's hard to even parse the quality between releases because they keep going back to the drawing board. The biggest problem is the games never get the time to cook, and SEGA is saying that the releases are going to start coming a lot more frequently. Yeah no thanks.

Re: DOOM: The Dark Ages Rips and Tears Day One on PS5

LikelySatan

@DarianStarfrog Doom has always been colorful with pickups, and almost every weapon in OG Doom was hit scan, not projectile. Your descriptions here, saying things like "ADHD head," etc? Kind of seems like you don't know what you are talking about. Eternal isn't bullet hell at all, lol.
I also don't know what you meant by "canny." Not much can be gleened from this trailer, as far as whether this game will be more like 2016, Eternal, or something new, gameplay wise

Re: DOOM: The Dark Ages Rips and Tears Day One on PS5

Seems they took the complaints about platforming and cartoony colors to heart. I didn't agree with those criticisms, but I trust id more than almost any developer out there. I can't wait.
And I agree this is an incredible showcase...so long as you aren't too concerned about the rest of 2024. I said it elsewhere, but man I was hoping MS would fill the hole that Nintendo and Sony are leaving this year. Darn. That would have been interesting.

Re: Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Says DOOM Franchise Is Something That 'Everyone Deserves to Play'

LikelySatan

Hard agree here, but it's my favorite franchise. The original game still lives on through games like Selaco and mods. Hell, I still play some version of 90s Doom (OG, 2, 64) most days. I wish there was a way that the hacker ethos could live on with modern Doom. If you don't know what I mean by that, I strongly suggest you check out the book Masters of Doom. The stories in that book from the early days of id are just nuts. And Doom Guy, John Romero's autobiography.

@BrettAwesome you keep saying "positive." I do not think you know what this word means. Are you talking about the body positivity types? Cause none of them are here...unless only you can see them!
Are they in the room with us now, Brett?
It was just some cartoon lady's butt. Just like always, maybe someone on Twitter will roll their eyes, but that's as far as it will go on that end. The real annoyance are the ones fantasizing that they're in some culture war about it...when it was just some person rolling their eyes. Their so annoyed by it that they need to build that darn annoying strawman everywhere they go, ya know? It's like they have no actual problems.
