If history repeats itself, studios bought by Microsoft change direction completely in a few years and then we have new indie studios led by industry experts that left Microsoft. Hopefully great games such as Crash, Spyro and Tony Hawk will continue to exist under different names eventually.
@NinjaNicky True. The difference is the length/scope of the game. It's less of a problem for shorter linear games to have similar sequels than it is for huge open-world games.
I played a lot of the first one and Miles Morales spin-off, and this seems awesome but more of the same. I'll definitely buy it, however not at launch period.
To be honest, I still need to get Tears of the Kingdom and FFXVI. So many great games this year!
Unpopular opinion: AC4 was the least interesting game in the series. The story is all over the place. Missions are uninspired and repetitive. The ground parts essentially mimic AC3 (which everyone hated) and the sea part becomes tedious quite fast once the novelty is gone.
In summary, everything that makes it AC replicates what has been done for AC3 plus sea navigation simulator.
There is a hugr audience for this game, though, so it's probably a good idea financially.
They don't really need to worry, while the number of sales will certainly increase faster in the first few weeks since launch, a brand new Final Fantasy will definitely continue to sell for years until 17 is ready.
Am I the only one who thinks Sony is exaggerating in their marketing for this game? FFXVI can sell a whole lot on its own brand alone, it's not like nobody knows FF.
There are so many different marketing videos showing up in my Instagram timeline, both from SE and Sony's accounts, and they're all focused on "you don't have to play the previous FF games" or "here is a famous person loving the game". Come on! It's Final Fantasy! If you want to market it, focus on the actual game, people already know about the IP.
This is ok for the likes of Legend of Zelda and God of War. It's definitely not ok for all AAA games. A game that takes forever to create also takes a lot of money, and then you go Square-Enix about how a game sold poorly with zillions of sales. The big publishers need to start working on a roadmap distributing small, medium and big games along the way.
I hope they adjust their expectations. I for one will definitely buy FF XVI, but not at launch because i don't have the time or money to dedicate to this game right now.
I'm looking forward to this. I'm officially a gamer dad starting in November, and I'd like to avoid playing violent adult games where my kid might see it.
@UltimateOtaku91 If they consistently deliver high quality games, though, they'll have money, knowledge and talents to explore new/old IPs too. Capcom is using this strategy and I'm consistently buying their games at launch due to how awesome they are.
That's really cool. I wish they did something similar for PS5, but perhaps as a pluggable device instead of a full dev set. AFAIK Unity can only be used for dedicated consoles if you pay for it, so perhaps a Sony device that allowed any custom code access to their APIs could recreate that sense of community again.
I agree completely. In fact, I didn't renew my sub because I just buy the few games I want (and have time) to play each year. The sub only added value to my imagination (maybe one day I'll play this or that!)
Well, videogame history is full of side activities turned into full spin-off games later after people fell in love with the side activity. There was no reason for WB to remove it completely and offer as a separate game. The game is already huge, full of details, it's more likely that they didn't have the time and budget to focus on yet another part of wizarding world.
I don't like NG+ because it often breaks the story and balance of the game. The characters are too strong early in the game and also have the wrong clothes (think Miles Morales already wearing the outfit he creates in the turning point of his story).
@GodofCapcom At this point, I honestly believe only Silksong can take the GOTY from Capcom, assuming it's as perfect as Hollow Knight and releases this year.
Konami was everywhere in the past, I remember booting multiple games with their logo even in the Super Nintendo era. They have lots of IPs to explore, hopefully everything works out!
I suppose they could create a sort of summer game fest where they host a series of online events with big publishers since so many are actually doing their own thing around June anyway.
But E3 as we knew it is long dead. They better cancel it.
Sequel or spin-off, I hope they experiment a bit more with the formula. God of War is really long, and Ragnarok is essentially the same game with a new story and it's also really long.
Its like having too much of a really good food. I was satisfied with the first game, and I got way past full with the second game. That's enough for many years.
Just sign a contract for Call of Duty to remain multiplatform forever and move on, Microsoft. Seriously, Sony couldn't care less about all the other 1000s of IPs owned by Activision that Xbox players will benefit from, all they're complaining about is COD.
Zero need. Games are still not fully using PS5 potential (not to mention many games are still releasing on last gen). This and the fact that PS5 only recently became easier to find in stores are reason enough not to release a Pro.
A smaller, more efficient version, though, could come any day now.
They should Capcom-ize their business model. Study and understand each game franchise to not lose its core ideas, and explore what you do best. Square Enix has some great IPs, but it seems lost in how to market them. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest and Kingdom Hearts sell like crazy for a reason.
Loved it, so nostalgic yet it has more depth than before. RE Engine remains a state-of-art game engine.
My only complaint is that the enemies feel stronger than the original, especially the chainsaw dude (my brother and I used to call him "paper-bag head"). I used a grenade, all my shotgun bullets close to him, multiple handgun shots, tried to aim for his head or legs, and still he didn't die.
I didn't watch it. PlayStation is not good at this stuff at all. But hey, at least we have news on Resident Evil 4!
As for the new Suicide Squad, I didn't look into it and I'm honestly not interested. Suicide Squad itself is enough to keep me away - seriously, they would sell better a random new IP than this.
@LiamCroft I loved the original PS1 games, especially due to exploring Hogwarts, solving "puzzles" with spells and the fun lessons. How would you compare Hogwarts Legacy to those?
@get2sammyb Sony announced recently a giant PS5 and Mjolnir in Brazil as well. Pretty cool! I wish these campaigns reached other cities besides Sรฃo Paulo, though.
Whatever it is, it's probably not coming on PS5. ND seems to be the slowest PS Studio to develop new games. I get that they are the crown jewel of PS Studios and their games HAVE to be perfect. Still, I wish they would release games more often.
I enjoyed the previous games, so I'll definitely get this one.
I hope they create new gameplay elements though. GoW: Ragnarok is pretty much GoW with a new story (similar to Miles Morales approach, but huge in scope), and I don't really want to pay full price for another sequel that adds nothing new to gameplay.
Not sure about this. The game is brilliant but at the same time the award could go to God of War (2018) since it's exactly the same game with a different story. Well deserved, but also not... I guess they raised the bar too high for themselves.
Playing Ragnarok now, but Odin and Thor acting so far have been great! I didn't get to her yet, so big spoiler alert, haha.
So far, it's an outstanding game. The only issue is that it's outstanding because God of War was outstanding, since it's exactly the same game with a different story.
I expect Sony to reduce the price on PS5 as well. It would be a terrible business decision to offer a high profile Naughty Dog game cheaper on PC than on their own platform.
I don't really get the appeal of NG+ personally. You start with equipment and stats you shouldn't have yet which mess up the plot of many games (where you would acquire something later on), and from a gameplay perspective makes everything easier from the start... Also, building up a character is a core part of RPGs, which you won't do in NG+.
As for ACV though, I also don't think anyone can complain, Ubisoft delivered a lot of post-game content (much better use of limited resources IMO).

Re: Assassin's Creed Mirage Nowhere Near the Length of Origins, Odyssey, Valhalla
It's funny that publishers got so used to huge 100+ hours open-world games that a 20-30 hours game is considered small and not worth a full price tag.
Not complaining about paying less, just wondering why won't they create more "smaller" games if you can even make a profit with a cheaper price tag...

Re: Final Fantasy 16 (PS5) - Final Fantasy's Triumphant Return to the Top
I loved FFXV, to be honest. And this seems to be more FFXV with KH battle mechanics in the mix and a more focused story.
I wonder how amazing the next Kingdom Hearts game will be after reading about the battle mechanics of this game.
So the big question is - is it worth the launch price?
