Re: Dragon Age: The Veilguard Sales Keep Pace with Dragon's Dogma 2, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in UK

@Justin113 There's no "objectively" about it. I hate it when people use the term "objective" to support an argument that is entirely subjective.

If they wanted to skew reviews then they didn't do a very good job. They sent review copies out to critics that had been very critical of the game from the start. Why would they do that if they were paying for good reviews? Just to balance it out?

The argument that reviews are faked and paid for is always absurd. It's only ever said when people don't agree with a games positive score. It's OK not to like it but the general consensus seems to be that it's a good but flawed game not unlike every other Dragon Age. The flaws may bother some more than others and so your milage may vary.

User reviews are a different thing entirely and should generally always be ignored.

@Justin113 Just like with Rebirth then earlier in the year. Speculation from both sides trying to prove if the game is a success or failure. Truly bizarre to see so many people invested in games failing these days.

In regards to Veilguard we even have people trying to imply that critics have faked their reviews just because they don't agree with the positive score. Yet if the reviews reflected how they feel and it was sitting at a 4 or something they would be saying "the reviews don't lie, the game is awful" it's all bollocks.

Re: Metacritic Responds to Ongoing Dragon Age: The Veilguard Review Bombing Campaign

Cloud39472

You can always tell when a game has been review bombed by the sheer amount of reviews when compared to other games. For the most extreme example, The Last Of Us 2 has a crazy 163000+ user reviews. Compare that to another big Playstation IP like God Of War that wasnt controversial and it only has a little over 20000...

So looking at Veilguard, it currently has over 5000 user reviews already. Compared to another multiplatform game like Dragons Dogma 2 which barely has 2000 user reviews or Metaphor Refantazio which has just over 1000 or even Rebirth which has 5000 too but has been out for far longer.

When you see the numbers like this, it's blatantly obvious when a game has been bombed to lower the score. Either the game has sold large amounts, hence more reviews from disgruntled buyers or the more likely reason which is a lot of people who never bought the game using and abusing it to support whatever their agenda is.

For those who say it goes both ways, this is true but let's not pretend that there aren't far more people who will be petty and go out of their way to give a game a 0 than there are who will try to counterbalance it with 10's. Most people are just happily playing the game and aren't paying attention to the gamer culture wars.

Re: Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Significantly Longer Than Kiryu's Recent Spin-Off

Cloud39472

Yeah that one too. I think it's also because in 7, it seems pretty obvious that only Ichiban can see what he sees. In IW though everyone reacts to the big shark and the kraken so it can't really be passed off as just his point of view anymore.

That's fair. The combat does look really good and I'll probably get it eventually just for that and the music always slaps. I'm just waiting to see what people think about the story as for me, that's the most important part.

Re: Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Significantly Longer Than Kiryu's Recent Spin-Off

Cloud39472

@Yagami For me personally my examples mostly boil down to the forced minigames because then the minigames are no longer a side activity and are now part of the main plot that cannot be ignored and overall makes the game feel more lighthearted and goofy. I prefer when the two were kept seperate.

For an example not related to minigames, I would say the giant shark boss fits the bill. There's only so much I can believe as just being ichiban's imagination. There are probably other moments that I've forgotten but I know that this one just felt really off to me and I don't like the direction in which the series is heading.

There are certainly still serious moments but they felt far apart in IW. The beginning especially is so agonisingly slow and feels like nothing significant happens for a long time.

Otherwise I also agree with your points about the story. The writing was definitely not as strong which is a shame because it felt like they were really on a roll after Yakuza 0. Feels like I'm back to Yakuza 5 and rubber bullets.

Re: Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii Significantly Longer Than Kiryu's Recent Spin-Off

Cloud39472

@Yagami Infinite Wealth leaned way too hard into it's goofy side, even derailing the main plot at times for the sake of locking you into silly minigames that you can't avoid doing.

Dondoko island (which I hated) for example won't let you leave and get back to the main plot until you've gone through several tutorials.

I didn't like half of the writing in IW either. The only thing I thought was an overall improvement was the combat which was great. Everything else though felt like a downgrade from 7 which was my personal favourite.

Don't get me started on how shafted Ichiban was in this game too. How is Ichiban going to become the new face of Yakuza if he's constantly kept in Kiryu's shadow?

Anyway, Pirate Yakuza looks like it has great combat but everything else puts me off because like IW, it seems they're prioritising making the series more of a joke. Which is a shame because I love Majima.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Metaphor: ReFantazio?

Cloud39472

@Nei That is absolute crazy talk to me but I won't go into it too much. The way you seem to feel about Metaphor is the way I feel about Falcom games, they're hideous and bland and Metaphor looks better by a long shot but I'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm glad you like the game overall 👍🏻

Re: Expedition 33 Dev Confirms $50 Price Is Correct, '30+ Hours of Main Game'

Cloud39472

Call me crazy but I feel like RPG's have to be on the longer side. If an RPG is under 50 hours, it just feels way too short. I say this as someone who struggles to beat all the huge games I play in time before the next one comes out.

I do enjoy shorter games but when it comes to RPG's, I like them to be big. Not saying I won't get this though, it looks brilliant.

Re: Spider-Man 2 Won't Receive Any PS5 Story DLC

Cloud39472

That really sucks. On release, Spider-Man 2 was missing features that the first game already had and overall had less content so it's a shame that there won't be any DLC now to add a bit more bulk to it. This has been a bit of a disappointing sequel. Such a shame.

Re: Poll: Are You Playing Metaphor: ReFantazio?

Cloud39472

I would be playing it right now but the collectors edition (which you can only buy from GAME) has not yet arrived. The woes of buying physical. Although usually my games arrive early due to ordering from ShopTo who put GAME to shame.

Re: Random: Internet Trolls Tried to Downgrade Our Silent Hill 2 PS5 Review Score

Cloud39472

@Fishnpeas Lies Of P, Stellar Blade, Remnant 2, Wo Long, Rise Of The Ronin, Midnight Suns, A Plague Tale Requiem, Baldurs Gate 3, Metaphor Refantazio, Fate Samurai Remnant, Black Myth Wu Kong, Hogwarts Legacy, Kena Bridge Of Spirits, Lost Judgment, Tales Of Arise, Hades, Returnal, Scarlet Nexus, Granblue Fantasy Relink, Dragons Dogma 2 etc

I excluded a few others as I wasn't sure they fit what you were asking for. Like Resident Evil 8,Yakuza 8, Final Fantasy 16 and other games from long running series. There's probably more too that I'm forgetting as I don't play every single game ever.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 549

Cloud39472

I just finished Legend Of Dragoon this morning as I've been working through the backlog recently. It was OK? A 6/7 out of 10 type game. I'm playing the Metaphor Demo now, ready for the release on Thursday and I love it already.

Feels like Atlus meets FF and I'm just soaking in as much of the atmosphere as I can.

Re: Report Finds Lack of Star Wars Outlaws Sales Disturbing

Cloud39472

@tameshiyaku Just wanted to add as well that Star Wars is so big and pushes out so much content that there is always going to be something that you may not like. I love Star Wars but there are plenty of Comics and Books that I haven't read and some shows that I didn't like or some Films that I liked more than others.

I've never understood the Star Wars fans that can't just take the good and leave the bad. I also find it funny that a lot of them must be grown men in their 40's by now and they still can't let it go.
